Lack of sleep is killing us

A “catastrophic sleep-loss epidemic” is causing a host of potentially fatal diseases, according to professor Matthew Walker, director of the Centre for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley. In an interview with the Guardian, he warns that sleep deprivation is not being taken seriously enough by employers and everyday people alike — according to his research, there is a “powerful” link between a lack of sleep and cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and other conditions. "No aspect of our biology is left unscathed by sleep deprivation,” he says. “It sinks down into every possible nook and cranny. And yet no one is doing anything about it. Things have to change: in the workplace and our communities, our homes and families."

She was KILLING herself. Being a perfectionist just quickened the process. Because of her overly demanding boss and perfectionism, she wasn't sleeping.

Nothing was good enough, her mind was always worried. She worried about being worried and wasn't sleeping.

Her brain didn't function as well and she started noticing mistakes. Little mistakes that she never would have made before. Her body didn't function as well. She was feeling broken all the time.

Her boss made it worse. He insisted on more and more. Every time she produced, he increased the workload. A deadly cycle.

The panic attacks became too real.
The lack of sleep finally caught up with her.

The breakdown was inevitable.

A colleague came to visit her in the hospital. Her friend told her she was good enough without all of the extra proof she was trying to create. Those kind words changed her.

It was in the HOSPITAL when she decided none of this was worth it. She put her health first and stopped putting work over sleep. She committed to 8 hours of sleep per night.

Eventually, she regained her life. She felt whole again. Sleep works.

Work is important.
Health is MORE important.

*It is amazing what a few kind words said at the right time can do.
