Bonne lecture ; )

The Antibiotic Fiasco

One course of antibiotics, and your gut is never the same

Antibiotics are considered one of modern medicine's greatest achievements, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, antibiotics have been a fiasco that has devastated the health of our population. Just one course of antibiotics will do permanent damage to your digestive and immune systems.

This damage shows up in immune system problems like rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune illnesses, allergies, cancer, and various infections including urinary tract, bowel, gum, tooth, vaginal and sinus infections; candida and other yeast infections; skin problems like acne and eczema; migraine headaches; asthma; ADHD; depression and anxiety; high cholesterol and chronic inflammation; nutrient deficiencies; difficult pregnancies; and all kinds of gastrointestinal issues, such as constipation/diarrhea, colitis, Crohn's Disease, canker sores, diverticulitis, GERD, gluten and/or lactose intolerance, and H. pylori.

This is why it is so very important to prevent infections by keeping your immune system strong with good nutrition, ample sleep and exercise, and a complete supplement program including adequate amounts of vitamins C and D. If a serious infection manages to gain a foothold, find a practitioner who can help you treat it with natural substances like coconut oil, olive leaf extract, oregano oil and megadoses of vitamin C.

The purpose of antibiotics is to kill bacteria, and they do this very well. The problem is that our health depends upon the approximately 3-1/2 pounds of bacteria (most of which are beneficial and contribute to our health) and other bugs, collectively called the "gut flora," that live in our intestines.

About 70% of our immune system is found in the intestines, and the gut flora play a major role in it. Good bacteria are our first line of defense against pathogenic yeasts, parasites, and harmful bacteria, which they will kill or immobilize.

Gut flora is so vital to our physiological function, especially digestion and immunity, that scientists have begun to think of it as another organ -- similar to the heart or the lungs. Antibiotics cripple this vital organ.

Many health-minded people are now aware that antibiotics kill good bacteria as well as bad, but they believe they can take some yogurt (which contains good bacteria, called "probiotics") or probiotic supplements after finishing their antibiotics to replace the lost good bacteria and all will be well.

Unfortunately, although taking probiotics will help, it's not that simple. Let me repeat, even one course of antibiotics can permanently alter the balance of flora in your gut, which will never be the same! Your best bet is avoiding these dangerous drugs.

Antibiotic Recovery

The situation isn't hopeless

Before I wised up to conventional medicine, I had had several courses of antibiotics which left my gut flora in terrible condition. But I've achieved a high level of health by following the Beyond Health lifestyle and taking the products I'll tell you about below.

First though, how do you know if you have imbalanced flora? If you have any of the problems listed above, it would be worthwhile to get a test to find out. Call our office to find out how.

If you have this condition, diet is the first treatment consideration. You must eliminate all refined sugar, and greatly reduce or even for a while eliminate high-glycemic carbohydrates in general. Focus on proteins, the low-carbohydrate vegetables and the good fats. Generous amounts of coconut oil are especially recommended as it kills candida and other gut pathogens.

The products I'd recommend for antibiotic recovery are found in our Digestive Support Kit, which was designed to address imbalanced gut flora:

Probiotic Formula: This is a mix of extremely hardy and synergistic probiotics capable of making their way through the acidic environment of the stomach to arrive in the intestines, where they support existing probiotic populations. (Most probiotic supplements don't survive this hazardous journey, rendering them biologically useless.)

FOS: Found in some foods, like Jerusalem artichokes, FOS is the most studied and most effective of the pre-biotics. Pre-biotics are carbohydrates that humans can't use as food, but probiotics in the colon can. Pre-biotics nourish the probiotics you're taking as well as the good bacteria that already exist in the gut. Taking pro- and pre-biotics together is more effective than taking either alone.

Dietary Fiber Formula: This supplies additional pre-biotics as well as a mix of soluble and insoluble fibers that optimize the movement of food through the colon. When food moves too quickly through the colon (diarrhea), nutrients don't get absorbed well. When food moves too slowly (constipation), toxins accumulate favoring the growth of pathogens.

Endura/PAK Guard: Gut pathogens that overgrow in the absence of healthy amounts of good bacteria damage the lining of the intestines, leading to a dangerous situation called "leaky gut." With leaky gut, undigested food and pathogens get out into the bloodstream, creating a huge burden on the immune system. Leaky gut encourages the development of allergies, autoimmune illnesses and general inflammation. Endura/PAK Guard provides materials for healing and rebuilding the gut lining.

Cultured vegetables, like raw sauerkraut (it needs to be raw), added to your diet, also supply probiotics and are a healthy addition to the above program if tolerated.

How long does it take to recover from antibiotics? Unfortunately, once the gut flora have been seriously imbalanced, it can take 6 months to a year, sometimes more. If you have particular pathogen overgrowth, the most common being candida, there are additional products we can recommend (again, call our office). It would be best to work with a healthcare practitioner who is familiar with restoring healthy gut flora.

"Recovery" from severe antibiotic-induced gut flora imbalance is also a relative term. Whereas you can achieve a high level of health and well-being, you will have to continue to be mindful of diet (especially carbohydrates) and take maintenance doses of pre- and probiotics or risk slipping back into imbalance, with its accompanying unpleasant symptoms, again.
